I know you can't see it, but there's a big smile on my face because I finally got my father to break his long silence to my brother. They haven't seen eye to eye for years and have spoken in at least that long. I was able to get them together for my birthday, and the way I convinced them to come was to send each of them a note from me along with bouquets of flowers. It was the last thing I could think of to do, because these are not normally two men who would be affected by flowers. Though I am far away from my friends, it's nice to know that I can let them know I am thinking about them in a time of sadness and loss. Flowers are so much more tactile and have more substance than cards or electronic messages, like they are stand-ins for you. It's something they can move around and focus on in order to get the kind of feeling that I hope I would provide were I there. I'm glad that you can help me express my sympathy for the family in this way and that I can do it much more easily than if I were to go there myself.
