The hospital is not a fun place to be over the Holidays. I know, because I lived through it once. My dad spent last Christmas in hospital recovering from bypass surgery. So I wanted to send something to let him know we were all thinking of him. As a society, we tend to send flowers out of feelings of guilt for not being in a place we would normally be. Before the advent of automobiles and airplanes, we wouldn't stray too far from home (except in a few cases), and so we didn't have a need for sending gifts through the mail, or the Internet, or using FTD, or some other wire service.
