My father died after a long bout with cancer. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make any sort of arrangements, so my husband did most of them. Looking back, I could see that he was upset also, and he’s not exactly the arbiter of taste that he thinks he is when he’s in the right frame of mind. So when the flowers arrived for the funeral, I was struck by how understated and tasteful they were, entirely appropriate for the occasion. Who invented Valentine's Day? He must have been some kind of genius. It's right in the middle of winter when we're all busy trying to keep the winter chill out of the house. It makes you stop and think about all of the people you love and who love you. I am just floored sometimes at the reaction I get from my wife when I give her flowers, especially on Valentine's Day. I think it's because it's one day where we can forget about things like de-icing the driveway and block heaters and shoveling the sidewalk. I have dealt with certain delivery companies before who could not handle a slight discrepancy in the address with any smarts at all. It seems like if two numbers in a zipcode are transposed, it stops them in their tracks and they delay a couple days and charge you half again as much. I admit that I sometimes get zipcodes wrong. My memory isn’t what it used to be. But someone over there recognized the mistake I made on a flower delivery and it didn’t slow them down a whit.
