Maybe the fact that I was soliciting opinions from my own gift giving altered their answers a bit, but I don't think so. I don't resent in the fact that my mother likes him better than me, but it does make it easier to feel really good that I outdid him. Your flowers were just the pick me up that my sister-in-law needed. She's undergoing chemotherapy for cancer and there is a lot of time spent just trying to get through. People help, of course, but I think flowers help in a different way. It's important to give reminders of what kind of beauty there is in the world and what there is beyond the hospital walls to live for. I just want to give everyone who works there a hug.
