My father died after a long bout with cancer. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make any sort of arrangements, so my husband did most of them. Looking back, I could see that he was upset also, and he’s not exactly the arbiter of taste that he thinks he is when he’s in the right frame of mind. So when the flowers arrived for the funeral, I was struck by how understated and tasteful they were, entirely appropriate for the occasion. I thought I’d give you an idea. I paired the broken heart roses with a few of the hope and honor crosses. They both have the same visual theme of the red crossing through the white field, but the two of them together at the funeral said just the right thing without having to use any words. I decided to be audacious this year and send my boyfriend, who is in Peru with his family for the moment, a series of flower bouquets. One a day for a week until his birthday. The reason it was so audacious is that his family is in the florist business and use FTD every day.
