I've always been ambivalent about Valentine's Day, mostly because nothing ever happened. It's only recently that I've been in a serious relationship that has lasted through Valentine's Day, so maybe that has something to do with it. I think you've tapped into something here, about how people react to flowers and in what context they receive them probably affects how they are received.
