We weren't able to see the flower arrangements we sent for our daughter's graduation from law school in person, but it was with great pride that we received the images over e-mail and saw how happy she was, with her friends and the family that was there. Both my husband and I were awfully broken up by the end of the day, even though we couldn't be there. I am proud of her and proud of the way she represents our family. I know you can't see it, but there's a big smile on my face because I finally got my father to break his long silence to my brother. They haven't seen eye to eye for years and have spoken in at least that long. I was able to get them together for my birthday, and the way I convinced them to come was to send each of them a note from me along with bouquets of flowers. It was the last thing I could think of to do, because these are not normally two men who would be affected by flowers. I wanted to tell you that there's a new mother that appreciated the delivery of flowers to her bedside. My granddaughter entered the world last week. Sadly, the father could not be there because he's in Afghanistan. I saw the flowers arrive, and I saw the gleam in my daughter's eyes because she knew instantly who they were from. I saw the card and I thought I would share this with you because I was a little surprised that someone in Afghanistan could order flowers that look as nice as these. My father died after a long bout with cancer. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make any sort of arrangements, so my husband did most of them. Looking back, I could see that he was upset also, and he’s not exactly the arbiter of taste that he thinks he is when he’s in the right frame of mind. So when the flowers arrived for the funeral, I was struck by how understated and tasteful they were, entirely appropriate for the occasion.
