Back in the 1980s, there was a flower delivery service associated with a department store that has since been swallowed up by a larger company. Sometimes it seems like my children have all left me for their better lives in other places. At least they find time to let me know they are doing OK. I have been receiving flowers on my birthday and the American Mother's Day for several years. That is a nice custom I think. I noticed of late that the flowers that are coming seem brighter and cheerier, and I ask my children what's changed all of a sudden? They tell me they are using this new website. I am thanking you for somehow convincing them that these new flowers are a better gift because they are much prettier and last longer. I just sent some Valentine's Day roses to someone I've been admiring from afar for a while now. As I am writing this they are on route to him, and I don't know how he's going to react. I don't know if it's such a good idea that you have same day delivery, because it doesn't give me a chance to think everything through before things start to happen. I'm getting ahead of myself, I know, but I can't help it. I have all of this nervous energy, wondering what the reaction will be. This may sound a little silly, but I hope it doesn't. My best friend's cat died over the weekend, and I couldn't think of anything to do for her being so far away with work and all. The best thing I could think of was to send a nice sympathy bouquet. I know how close she was to that cat, and I didn't really know how to say that in words. My father died after a long bout with cancer. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make any sort of arrangements, so my husband did most of them. Looking back, I could see that he was upset also, and he’s not exactly the arbiter of taste that he thinks he is when he’s in the right frame of mind. So when the flowers arrived for the funeral, I was struck by how understated and tasteful they were, entirely appropriate for the occasion.
