Who invented Valentine's Day? He must have been some kind of genius. It's right in the middle of winter when we're all busy trying to keep the winter chill out of the house. It makes you stop and think about all of the people you love and who love you. I am just floored sometimes at the reaction I get from my wife when I give her flowers, especially on Valentine's Day. I think it's because it's one day where we can forget about things like de-icing the driveway and block heaters and shoveling the sidewalk. As a society, we tend to send flowers out of feelings of guilt for not being in a place we would normally be. Before the advent of automobiles and airplanes, we wouldn't stray too far from home (except in a few cases), and so we didn't have a need for sending gifts through the mail, or the Internet, or using FTD, or some other wire service. But we are products of our times, and because even nuclear families are so far flung, and because husbands and wives often live and work on different continents from one another, we have this need to send gifts to one anther in lieu of being there. What we're acknowledging is that we usually do what we can to make compromises between how we would like to live and how we would like to be close to one another. It's apparently socially acceptable to be apart like this as long as we can send each other things that remind us of this emotional connection even though there's no physical connection. The flowers I sent to my son and daughter-in-law for a congratulations on purchasing a new house actually got there. I mistakenly sent them to the new house address without thinking about escrow and even move-in time. I couldn't be there in person because I'm overseas, so I had to suffer through a night of thinking, "what did I forget?" It didn't hit me until my son called to say they were very appreciative of the flowers I sent. It was then that I remembered giving the wrong address on the form, and I became more confused because they actually got delivered to the right place. I'm bursting with pride at my kids being able to afford houses and I'm also red in the face because I can't even figure out where they are now!
