That's what I wasn't quite prepared for. I got the thank you calls for when the flowers arrived, but I also got calls weeks later about how long the flowers were lasting. Though I am far away from my friends, it's nice to know that I can let them know I am thinking about them in a time of sadness and loss. Flowers are so much more tactile and have more substance than cards or electronic messages, like they are stand-ins for you. It's something they can move around and focus on in order to get the kind of feeling that I hope I would provide were I there. I'm glad that you can help me express my sympathy for the family in this way and that I can do it much more easily than if I were to go there myself. He died after a long, lingering illness, so it wasn’t a shock, but we wanted to think of it as an end to his suffering.
