I would never have thought to send flowers to my brother to congratulate him on getting a new job. Before I sent him flowers, I wouldn't have suspected that he liked getting them. Maybe he wouldn't have suspected that either. But that was his day when he first went to work. He had the flowers right in front of him as he described the view from his office window. Though I am far away from my friends, it's nice to know that I can let them know I am thinking about them in a time of sadness and loss. Flowers are so much more tactile and have more substance than cards or electronic messages, like they are stand-ins for you. It's something they can move around and focus on in order to get the kind of feeling that I hope I would provide were I there. I'm glad that you can help me express my sympathy for the family in this way and that I can do it much more easily than if I were to go there myself. There's a new mother and baby that would like to thank you for the lovely and elegant dendrobium orchid delivered shortly before the baby was delivered. It was the first gift to arrive and it was waiting for me in the room when we all got back. I am writing this on a palm computer in the hospital. I wanted to indicate my appreciation to you, and I am also feigning being busy with something while my mother-in-law is trying to talk to me about the correct raising of my child. I've been dreading this moment, but she's the one who sent the orchid, so I guess I'll eventually have to sit through this lecture. Thank you for being a purveyor of beautiful things.
