I've always been ambivalent about Valentine's Day, mostly because nothing ever happened. It's only recently that I've been in a serious relationship that has lasted through Valentine's Day, so maybe that has something to do with it. In any event, this last Valentine's, I was actually in a relationship, so I wondered what would happen. Societal attitudes, I guess. I got her some candy, and she got me some flowers. But not just any flowers. They were these eye-popping spring flowers with full fragrance and very pretty. Of course, they were your flowers, which is why I'm writing to you. Sometimes it seems like my children have all left me for their better lives in other places. At least they find time to let me know they are doing OK. I have been receiving flowers on my birthday and the American Mother's Day for several years. That is a nice custom I think. I noticed of late that the flowers that are coming seem brighter and cheerier, and I ask my children what's changed all of a sudden? They tell me they are using this new website. Who invented Valentine's Day? He must have been some kind of genius. It's right in the middle of winter when we're all busy trying to keep the winter chill out of the house. It makes you stop and think about all of the people you love and who love you. I am just floored sometimes at the reaction I get from my wife when I give her flowers, especially on Valentine's Day. I think it's because it's one day where we can forget about things like de-icing the driveway and block heaters and shoveling the sidewalk.
